The colorful waterfront houses at Zhengbin Fishing Port deserve an unhurried look. There is no need to pack half a day around a single photograph. See the buildings, boats and water from a safe spot, then decide whether to add Heping Island Geopark according to the weather, your companions’ stamina and your return transport.
Keelung Tourism’s Zhengbin Fishing Port Colorful Houses guide explains that this was an important fishing port during Japanese rule; the colorful waterfront buildings are now a distinctive sight. The houses are only one part of a working port. Respect vehicles, boats, residents and businesses. Reflections, boat positions and light vary. The photo here was taken in 2020 and cannot confirm today’s viewpoint or shopfronts. From Keelung Station, include riding and waiting in your half-day estimate; a straight line on a map is not a travel time. For a wider comparison of trips near Taipei, see the Taipei day-trip guide, but this route focuses on Zhengbin and Heping Island rather than squeezing Jiufen or Pingxi into the same morning.
Viewing the colorful houses: choose a safe, permitted place to stop
Keelung City Government’s Zhengbin Fishing Port attraction information describes the historic port and gives a city-bus option from Keelung Transfer Station. On arrival, check traffic and pedestrian space before picking a viewpoint. Never cross or stand in a traffic lane or enter a working area for a photograph. The waterside can be slippery after rain; hold children’s hands and keep away from the water. Fishing and vehicle movements do not pause for visitors. Leave the route clear and respect residents’ privacy. The opposite bank can show the full row of façades, but only stop where on-site signs permit. Do not climb a railing or enter a closed area in search of a “perfect” angle.
For a gentle visit, choose two or three harbor viewpoints to see the buildings, boats and water, then rest. No particular café or dish is essential: opening hours, seats and queues change. Keelung weather can change quickly. In rain, shorten the outdoor walk and use a confirmed indoor place or meal as a backup; the Taiwan rainy-day itinerary guide offers planning principles, but check each business’s current notices. For a different northern waterfront walk on another day, compare the Tamsui riverside half-day route; transport hubs and coastal wind differ, so do not copy its walking time.
| Half-day choice | Best way to fit it in | Check before setting off |
|---|---|---|
| Zhengbin only | See the colorful houses, working harbor and waterfront streets; leave time to rest and return. | Bus direction, weather and pedestrian route |
| Add Heping Island | Keep the Zhengbin stop short and reserve time for admission and park paths. | Park opening, tickets, connections and sea conditions |
| Heavy rain or wind | Shorten the waterfront stop or visit another day rather than forcing a coastal walk. | Current notices, return services and group safety |
Heping Island is a separate choice: check time and admission first
Heping Island Geopark’s The official transport page transport page lists bus connections from Keelung Station and the transfer station. It also warns of limited holiday parking and possible traffic controls. Zhengbin is not the park entrance. If you have spent much of the half day taking pictures and eating by the harbor, there may be little time left for a relaxed park visit. First check the official hours and admission page before buying tickets. Prices, last admission, tours and rules for special areas can change; treat current notices as authoritative. The official site says regular admission does not include the controlled rock area or the Alabao Bay tour. A standard ticket is not permission to enter every coastal formation. If a typhoon, strong surf or a closure is announced, cancel the coastal segment.
If you want both stops, choose a priority. For harbor history and streets, make Zhengbin the main visit and add Heping Island only if transport and time work out. For coastal geology and park paths, stop briefly at Zhengbin and enter the park earlier. Allow for transfers, walking, tickets and queues; “nearby” does not mean zero travel time. Weather, tides and surf affect the coast. Follow staff and signs, stay on open paths, and do not climb rock formations or enter restricted areas. Wear shoes with grip, bring water, and allow generous rest and return time with older adults or young children. The EasyCard guide explains transit payment basics, but check the day’s service notices for routes, times and accepted payment.
Before returning, decide whether you are heading to Keelung Station, the transfer station or onward to Taipei. Confirm the correct side of the road, last service and wait time. For a different northern hillside walk on another day, the Jiufen transport and Old Street guide is useful; do not add it to a half day already covering Zhengbin and Heping Island. Building colors, boats and business hours may change by the day of your visit. The most reliable plan is to enjoy the main stop, then decide whether the remaining time allows a second one.
