A half-day trip to Hsinchu’s 17 km coast does not require cycling the whole route. Start at Nanliao Fishing Port for sea views. For an easy visit, stay near the harbour and Fish Scale Steps. For wetland wildlife, choose Xiangshan Crab-Watching Trail as a separate focus and check access and return travel first.
Hsinchu City’s tourism website says the coast runs about 17 km from Nanliao in the north to Nangang in the south, with broad intertidal flats around Xiangshan. The name describes a coastal area; it is not a promise that the entire ride fits into half a day. Even for a short stretch, allow time to travel both ways, stop for sea views and return a rented bicycle. If you arrive at Hsinchu Station, plan the old town and coast separately; see our Hsinchu old-center half-day walk, and do not squeeze Yingxi Gate, the City God Temple and the full coast into one half-day outing. Conditions, construction and closures can change along the bikeway. Check city notices and signs before setting out.
Choose a northern or southern section before deciding the distance
The Hsinchu City Government’s coastal itinerary links Hsinchu Fishing Port, Boguang Market, the Fish Scale Steps, Gangnan Canal Park and Xiangshan Crab-Watching Trail. This is a chain of sights, not a half-day checklist. If it is your first visit, a companion does not cycle, or the wind is stronger than expected, walk around Nanliao Fishing Port, enjoy the harbour and sea, then return to your planned transport stop. Pause at the Fish Scale Steps for the view, stay in the safe public area, and do not cross railings or climb onto wave breakers. Check whether Boguang Market and its stalls are open that day; do not rely on one stall for your only meal.
If wetland ecology is the main aim, make Xiangshan Wetland the focus instead of rushing south from Nanliao to catch sunset. The city’s estimated October 2026 access schedule for the Crab-Watching Trail lists daily windows but says actual access depends on on-site notices. Gusts of force 6 or higher close the trail. This schedule applies only to October 2026; for a later trip, check the Xiangshan Wetland Ecology site’s notices for the current month. Tides affect when the trail can be used, while strong wind, typhoons or heavy rain may bring temporary restrictions. Old photos and social posts cannot confirm that it is open. Observe crabs and mudskippers quietly from a distance; do not enter the mudflats or take wildlife. The city previously closed the trail after typhoon and high-tide damage, as its repair notice shows. On-site restrictions take priority over any itinerary.
| Half-day option | Best focus | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Easy walk around Nanliao | Harbour, Fish Scale Steps and short sea views | Wind, open areas, food and return transport |
| Short out-and-back ride | Ride one section and return to the rental point | Bicycle rental and return times, path conditions, stamina and water |
| Xiangshan wetland visit | Crab-Watching Trail and intertidal wildlife at a slow pace | Monthly access, tides, wind and on-site restrictions |
Transport, wind and the return: three easy-to-miss details
First decide how you will reach the coast. The city’s tourist bus information mentions a connection between Hsinchu Fishing Port and Xiangshan Wetland, but verify the route, frequency and operating dates for your travel day. Arriving at a station named “Hsinchu” does not mean the coast is within walking distance. Coming from another city? Use our seven-day itinerary guide to plan intercity travel. Drivers and cyclists should confirm parking, rental and return locations before choosing a turning point. Riding south also means covering the distance back. Bicycle rental and transport costs vary by operator and holiday; use our Taiwan travel cost guide to leave room in your budget instead of copying old prices. Riding into strong wind can take more effort than the distance suggests. Bring water, sun protection and wind protection, and turn back early in crosswinds or when tired. Slow down at junctions and give way to pedestrians; the bikeway is not a racecourse.
With children, a short harbour walk may be easier to pace than a long ride. Our family travel guide can help you allow time for water, toilets and breaks. In rain, thunderstorms or strong wind, switch to indoor stops and use our Taiwan rainy-day itinerary guide to reorder the day. If you stay for sunset, plan how to get back after dark. Do not miss the bus or ride an unfamiliar section in darkness for one last photo. For Xiangshan, read the current Crab-Watching Trail notice first, then work backwards from its access window to plan travel time.

Taken in 2012, it shows the coast then, not today’s bikeway access or facilities. For half a day, choose one theme: sea views at Nanliao, a short ride or crab-watching at Xiangshan. Verify changing transport and trail hours on the day so a closed entrance does not derail the visit.
