Taichung HSR Station is in Wuri; it is not the same as Taichung Railway Station. The best exit and transfer differ if you are staying in the old center, along the MRT Green Line or in Xitun. Find your hotel on a map before choosing a vehicle.
When your high-speed train reaches Taichung, do not choose a direction based only on the words ‘Taichung Station.’ Taichung Railway Station is near the old center. The HSR station in Wuri connects to Xinwuri Railway Station and the MRT Green Line's HSR Taichung Station. This determines whether you need the railway passage, MRT entrance or bus interchange. Save your hotel's address and nearest station, then compare them with the Taichung one-day itinerary by area so you do not mistake arrival at the HSR station for arrival downtown.
Choose the route by where you are staying
If your hotel is near Taichung Railway Station, Green River or the old center, consider following the passage near Exit 3 on the HSR station's second floor to Xinwuri Railway Station. From there, take a local train to Taichung Railway Station. The official Taichung HSR station transfer guide shows the passage and railway directions; check the day's train services with the Taiwan Railways transfer search before traveling. Taichung Tourism also describes this as a junction of high-speed rail, conventional rail and MRT. For a first visit, recognizing the name ‘Xinwuri’ is more useful than memorizing a travel time.
If you are staying near Green Line stations such as City Hall, Shui-an Temple or Wenxin Forest Park, look for the Taichung MRT entrance. Check whether your destination is on the Green Line, then decide whether you will still need to walk or change to a bus. The Taichung MRT station guide shows exits and transfers; check first and last services and train frequency in the MRT operator's latest notices. The Green Line does not go directly to every popular neighborhood. For Fengjia, Calligraphy Greenway or other areas far from a station, include the final leg in your total journey time rather than searching for a ride after leaving the MRT.
| Where you are staying | Route to consider first | Check before you get off |
|---|---|---|
| Taichung Railway Station or old center | Walk through to Xinwuri Railway Station, then take a local train to Taichung Railway Station | Today's local-train services and the Taichung Station exit nearest your hotel |
| Along the MRT Green Line | Change to Taichung MRT at HSR Taichung Station and get off at the station nearest your hotel | Destination station, exit, first and last trains, and walking distance afterward |
| Fengjia, Calligraphy Greenway or farther from rail stations | Compare the full door-to-door route by bus, MRT with a transfer, and taxi | Bus boarding point, number of transfers, luggage and arrival time |
The table gives an order for choosing a route, not a fixed timetable. Taichung Tourism's HSR access guide explains the three connected rail systems. At the station, still follow current signs for exits, platforms and waiting areas. A high-speed rail ticket does not automatically settle your Taiwan Railways or MRT fare; check those tickets separately. If you have not chosen an HSR service, read the Taiwan HSR ticketing and transfer guide and plan the next leg at the same time.
With luggage or a late arrival, compare the full trip
With large luggage, children or a hotel that is some distance from the station, the number of transfers and the walk afterward can matter more than a few minutes on the train. Locate your hotel's entrance on a map. If reaching it requires two changes and a long walk, compare a taxi's door-to-door convenience. Show the driver the full address in Chinese, rather than just saying ‘Fengjia’ or ‘city center’ and being dropped far from your hotel. Time and fare depend on traffic, so this guide gives no fixed estimate.
A bus may also be convenient, but routes, boarding bays and service arrangements can change. Check Taichung's live bus information on your travel day instead of relying on an old bus-stop photo. The bus interchange and the railway passage lead in different directions at the HSR station. For paying fares, consult the EasyCard guide; available tickets and concessions are subject to the operator's current rules. If you are also visiting attractions or a night market that day, put the Taichung food districts on the same map. You can then decide whether to leave your luggage at the hotel before eating.
If you arrive late, first check the last Taiwan Railways, MRT or bus departure; do not assume all three still run. If a connection has ended, compare the hotel's address and available taxi pickup points. Before booking, the guide to choosing accommodation by location can help you check the final stretch: being near a station does not always mean an easy walk with luggage. A practical arrival order is to confirm your hotel address, choose the railway or MRT direction, check current services, then decide whether a bus or taxi is better. That way you know which way to turn as soon as you leave the HSR train.
