The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway connectsIta Thao (Sun Moon Lake side)withFormosan Aboriginal Culture Village, about 1.9 kilometers in total length, with a one-way ride of about 7–10 minutes—it's the most effortless angle for looking down over the whole lake, and well worth it on a clear day. According to the official Sun Moon Lake Ropeway website, starting June 1, 2026,full-fare tickets are NT$420 and concession tickets NT$330; children under 3 years old or under 100 cm tall ride free (subject to the rules and accompanied by a parent). Operating hours areroughly 10:30–16:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:30 on weekends and holidays. As a rule, the first Wednesday of each month is a maintenance shutdown day, and it may also be suspended for bad weather or annual inspections, so please confirm on the official website before you set out. Note that a cable car ticket is only valid for one round trip on the same day, not unlimited rides all day; if you also want to enter the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, that admission is charged separately.
If you'd rather not cycle but still want to get around on the lake, taking the boat is the most relaxing option. Most Sun Moon Lake cruise boats use aday pass, on which you can board and disembark unlimited times between the three piers—Shuishe, Xuanguang Temple, and Ita Thao—on the same day, and just catch the next boat when you're tired; a full loop around the lake takes about 50 minutes, boats generally operate from morning to afternoon, and departures are more frequent in peak season. Day-pass prices vary slightly among boat companies (commonly around NT$300; please refer to on-site or official announcements). Tickets can be bought on-site, but in peak season it's best to book in advance on the official or a ticketing platform. If you want to cycle, the Sun Moon Lake bike path has been named by international media as one of the most beautiful cycling routes in the world; the top recommendation for beginners and families is"Xiangshan Section" from Shuishe to the Xiangshan Visitor Center, about 3.4 kilometers long, flat and easy to ride along the lake, taking about half an hour one way, and the exposed-concrete architecture of the Xiangshan Visitor Center is also great for photos; those who are fit and want a challenge can complete the full round-the-lake route, about 30 kilometers. There are bike rental shops around Shuishe, Xiangshan, and Ita Thao, offering regular bicycles, electric-assist bikes, family bikes, and tandems; rentals usually require leaving ID as a deposit, subject to each shop's on-site policy. Summer sun is strong, so remember to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. As for where to stay: if you want to see the lake at dawn and be able to walk to a pier, stay in theShuishe or Ita Thaolake area, where room rates are higher and you need to book early in peak season; if you want to save a bit and don't mind driving or taking a bus in and out, you could consider staying inPuli, with plenty of options and easy dining, about a 30-minute drive away. Wherever you stay, rooms fill up fast on weekends and long holidays, so book early.
