The MRT Red Line connects Kaohsiung Airport directly with the city, but there is no single stop called ‘the city.’ Sanduo Shopping District, Kaohsiung Main Station, Yanchengpu and Zuoying need different routes. Find the station nearest your hotel before choosing a transfer.
Once you have collected your luggage at Kaohsiung International Airport, you need not automatically join the taxi queue. The airport is served by R4 Kaohsiung International Airport Station on the MRT Red Line. According to the airport's official transport guide, Exit 6 leads to the international terminal and Exit 2 to the domestic terminal. These are different entrances; follow the signs for your terminal. The Red Line serves Sanduo Shopping District, Formosa Boulevard, Kaohsiung Main Station and Zuoying. Compare your hotel's address with the Kaohsiung area guide before choosing a stop. Kaohsiung Main Station is not the right destination for every hotel.
Choose your stop by where you are staying
For a hotel near Sanduo Shopping District, Central Park or Kaohsiung Main Station, usually take a Red Line train towards Gangshan Station and get off at the stop nearest your hotel. Then check the correct exit and walking route. If you are staying near Zuoying HSR Station, remain on the Red Line to Zuoying. HSR and MRT are separate systems; if you plan to take HSR the next day, allow time for luggage, the station walk and the transfer rather than comparing train time alone. The official Kaohsiung MRT route map shows the Red Line stations and the transfer at Formosa Boulevard. It is clearer than guessing which direction means ‘city center.’ If you are connecting to HSR, the high-speed rail ticketing and transfer guide can help you plan the next leg.
For Yanchengpu, Hamasen or another Orange Line stop, take the Red Line to Formosa Boulevard and change there. Check which direction your Orange Line train is going; the line color alone is not enough. This adds another walk between platforms, which matters with large luggage or children. For Pier-2 or the Cijin ferry area, you may still need to walk or take another service after the transfer. The Kaohsiung day-trip guide can help you compare attractions with your hotel location. The city's tourism office also lists MRT, bus and taxi as different airport transfer options in its getting-to-Kaohsiung guide. Cross-check the route you choose before you travel.
| Hotel or onward destination | Route to consider first | Check before leaving the airport |
|---|---|---|
| Sanduo Shopping District, Central Park or Kaohsiung Main Station | Take the Red Line towards Gangshan Station; get off at the stop nearest your hotel | Hotel address, MRT exit and final walking distance |
| Yanchengpu, Hamasen or another Orange Line stop | Take the Red Line to Formosa Boulevard, then change to the Orange Line in the correct direction | Transfer passage, destination stop and last Orange Line connection |
| Near Zuoying HSR Station | Take the Red Line to Zuoying, then follow signs to HSR or your hotel | HSR departure, luggage and a realistic transfer buffer |
| Late arrival or several travelers with large luggage | Check the last train; if you miss it, use the authorized airport taxi queue | Current pickup point and full hotel address in Chinese |
The table is a way to choose a route, not a fixed timetable. A hotel described as ‘in Kaohsiung’ may still be far from an MRT stop, so include the final walk or connection. If you have not booked yet, the guide to choosing accommodation by location can help you check the last stretch after an evening arrival. A cheap room may be less appealing if it requires two changes and a long walk with luggage. Confirm current MRT fares and accepted payment methods with the operator. The EasyCard guide is useful preparation, but do not assume that every transport system has the same ticket rules.
Late arrivals, luggage and rainy-day options
A late flight can leave you able to catch a Red Line train at the airport but too late to change to the Orange Line at Formosa Boulevard. The Kaohsiung Airport MRT first-and-last-train page also lists the latest services that still connect with other lines. Allow time for immigration, baggage claim, the walk to the station, ticket purchase and the change of train. Holiday schedules and service arrangements can change; check the official timetable and station notices on your travel day. The airport station's exit and station guide can help you find the lift and the correct terminal entrance.
If you miss the MRT, face heavy rain or have several bags, compare the convenience of an airport taxi. The airport's transport page gives the authorized taxi-queue locations for both terminals and separate rules for app-booked vehicles. Follow current signs when you arrive, and do not accept unsolicited rides. Have your hotel's full address in Chinese and a phone number ready; arrange a child seat in advance if needed. The fare follows the meter and current airport rules, so this guide gives no fixed estimate. To allow for immigration time, consult the Taiwan arrival and immigration guide and do not treat landing time as the time you can board a train or taxi.
A practical arrival order is to identify your terminal and nearest MRT entrance, match your hotel address to a Red or Orange Line stop, then check the last usable connection. If that connection has ended, find the authorized taxi pickup point. This lets you decide your first leg from current information instead of guessing at the baggage carousel.
