Decide whether you want an exhibition, a deeper understanding of the 228 Incident, or quiet time in the park. The venues have different visiting rules.

228 Peace Memorial Park need not be covered end to end. The Tourism Administration’s attraction guide explains the park’s connection to the 228 Incident and introduces its memorial monument and the National Taiwan Museum’s main building. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum is also in the park. A park walk, an exhibition at the National Taiwan Museum and a visit to learn about the incident are three different ways to spend time here. If you are passing through Taipei Main Station, choose one museum and a short walk rather than squeezing every nearby gallery into half a day. For a first city trip, use our seven-day Taiwan itinerary to fit this stop into the rest of your route.

Choose your focus before entering a museum

If architecture and exhibitions interest you most, make the National Taiwan Museum’s main building your focus. Its visitor and ticket information lists the main building at No. 2 Xiangyang Road; the Paleontology Museum is a separate building. Ticket rules, exhibitions and guided tours can change, so check the museum’s website before entering. Look at the building from the park path, then choose a floor or exhibition that interests you. You do not need to rush through everything. On Mondays or after closing, make this an outdoor walk around the park, monument and nearby streets. An open park does not mean the museum is open.

To understand the history behind the park’s name, make the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum your focus instead of stopping only for a photograph at the monument. Its official visitor guidelines currently say admission is free, the museum opens Tuesday through Sunday and closes Monday, and visitors must follow the rules for its historic building and galleries. It is a different institution from the National Taiwan Museum, not another entrance on the same ticket. Allow time to read and reflect in the exhibition rather than racing through it. If visiting with children, look at the exhibition themes first and decide together whether to go in. Our Taiwan family travel guide can help you set a suitable pace.

Half-day focus

How to plan it

Check before setting off

Park and memorial monument

Walk along open paths from the MRT station and leave time to read the on-site interpretation. Shorten the outdoor section if it rains.

Check access, weather and any event-related changes.

National Taiwan Museum main building

Focus on one museum, then see the architecture and take a short park walk.

Check today’s opening, exhibitions, tickets and last entry.

Taipei 228 Memorial Museum

Focus on the history exhibition, then pause at the monument rather than treating the visit as a race between photo spots.

Check opening, visitor rules and special notices.

The three options do not belong to one ticket. In good weather, you can visit only the park and monument. If it rains, choose one indoor museum and keep the outdoor walk short. Our rainy-day itinerary guide helps pair this stop with other indoor places. If you want another Taipei museum, save the National Palace Museum half-day guide for a different day: it is outside this park and needs its own travel and exhibition time.

From MRT to park: leave room for the return

The simplest approach is to take the MRT to NTU Hospital Station and follow signs to the park. The National Taiwan Museum’s transport information suggests Exit 4 for its main building. It says the walk from Taipei Main Station’s M5 Exit to the museum is about ten minutes. This is guidance to the National Taiwan Museum, not a promise that everyone will take the same time from the platform to the memorial museum. With luggage, slower walkers or accessibility needs, check the station’s exit facilities and park entrances before choosing your order. Several roads border the park, so identify whether you are returning to NTU Hospital Station, Taipei Main Station or another city stop.

If you are coming from our Dadaocheng walk or Taipei Botanical Garden walk, check the connection on a map first. Being in central Taipei does not make every pair of sights a convenient walk. Half-day plans lose their breathing room when travel, queues and time to read exhibitions are treated as zero. On arrival, check whether the venue entrance is open and decide whether to visit indoors or walk first. If both museums appeal to you, save one for another day so you can take in an exhibition properly.

This public space also carries memories. Photograph buildings and scenery with care; remain quiet and respectful near the monument, in memorial galleries and around other visitors. The memorial museum restricts photography equipment and food inside, so read its signs. The National Taiwan Museum has its own visitor rules; do not apply one institution’s rules to the other. On your travel day, check the National Taiwan Museum notices with 228 Memorial Museum guidelines, especially on Mondays, holidays and event days. Leave room to read and reflect, as well as enough time for the journey back.

The cover image shows the National Taiwan Museum’s main building in 2024.
