Check official notices for information that may change.

Give Liyu Lake a relaxed half-day. Choose a walk or a bike ride, then set your turnaround time around the bus back instead of squeezing a full circuit into the visit.

Liyu Lake lies in Shoufeng Township, separate from the seaside Qixingtan. This is an inland lake with routes around it, not a beach where visitors can simply enter the water. If you are coming from Hualien City for the first time, use the north-shore visitor center as your meeting and information point. Once there, weigh the weather, your companions’ energy and the bus timetable before choosing a short walk or the full cycling loop. To understand distances across Hualien, start with ourHualien travel guide. For a coastal outing, see our separateQixingtan half-day guide; these are not neighboring attractions.

Start at the north-shore visitor center and choose your distance

Taiwan Tourism Administration’s Liyu Lake listingplaces the lake in Shoufeng Township and identifies a visitor center on the north shore. From Hualien Station, transfer to a bus serving the Liyu Lake North Shore Visitor Center stop. TheHualien Tourism visitor-center pagealso lists transit and visitor services. Routes, stops and last departures can change. Check the operator’s current notices for both directions before setting out; an arrival time alone is not a return plan. Allow time to get from the shore back to the correct stop and wait for the bus. Card users can read ourEasyCard guide, but confirm the accepted payment method for the service on your travel day.

On arrival, take in the lake and hills, then ask at the visitor center about current route conditions, bicycle rental and any temporary restrictions. If you only want an easy view, walk a short open stretch of the north shore, pause where the view suits you and retrace your steps to the bus stop. Completing a loop is not a requirement for a half-day visit. The Tourism Administration describes an approximately 4 km lakeside road; that is not automatically the distance each visitor will walk or cycle, or the distance from the bus stop. If someone needs accessible facilities, check the visitor center and the portions currently usable. Do not assume every part of a lake circuit is level or step-free. With children or older companions, a short lakeside stop can be more pleasant than a full circuit.

Half-day option

Suggested plan

Check before leaving

Short north-shore walk

Walk an open lakeside section near the visitor center, then retrace your steps

Path conditions, shade and bus-stop location

Cycle around the lake

Ride the official route of about 4.8 km and slow down on descents

Bike rental, brakes, wet surfaces and return time

Rain or limited time

Shorten the outdoor visit or choose an alternative activity

Service notices and last bus

Add another attraction

Calculate round-trip travel first, then choose one nearby stop

Opening conditions and transfer time

The cycling loop is about 4.8 km; take care on damp descents

East Rift Valley National Scenic Area cycling-route guidelists the route at about 4.8 km and notes small rises and falls along the hillside. Humidity near the lake can make descents slippery. This cycling-route length differs from the roughly 4 km lakeside-road description above; neither is an exact walking distance for every visitor. If renting a bike, test the brakes, adjust the saddle and confirm where and when to return it. Slow down at blind bends and where people and vehicles meet; a published riding-time estimate is no reason to rush. Do not hold up a phone for photos while moving or stop suddenly in the middle of the route. Afternoon weather can change. If rain intensifies or water gathers on the path, shorten the ride and follow on-site safety directions.

Some visitors try to put Liyu Lake and Taroko in the same half-day, although the travel directions, access checks and time needed differ. For a multi-day Hualien itinerary, read ourTaroko travel guideand check the latest access notices for each area separately. For boating or other activities on Liyu Lake, ask a legitimate operator about permitted areas, flotation equipment and weather restrictions. Seeing someone on the lake does not mean you may enter the water or board from any shore. Even on land, do not cross barriers for photos or approach the water on slippery rocks after rain. If weather worsens, use ourTaiwan rainy-day alternativesto choose a more reliable indoor or town activity.

The easiest time to overlook is the gap between leaving the attraction and boarding your bus. After walking or riding, you may still need to return the bike, find the stop in the correct direction and wait. Holidays and events call for extra slack. Save the operator’s timetable before departure, then treat the notices at the stop and from the operator on the day as final. If your planned bus no longer works, replan from a safe place to wait instead of running along the shore or road after it. Liyu Lake is easy to adapt to weather and energy: stop for the view, turn back when needed, and let the lake itself be the highlight.

Plan a lakeside walk or ride the roughly 4.8 km cycling route from the north-shore visitor center.
